She was born in Manti, Utah, the last of five children, to Wilford Silas "Dick" and Martha Jenette Mortensen Carlson. Mom's childhood memories are of spending winters during her grade school years being raised in Zion Park at the Court of the Patriarchs. She was baptized, as were her siblings: Rex M. Carma did not attend the LDS church most her adult life, but loves and was blessed by her Heavenly Father and believed she is sealed to her parents now. As a teen, Carma lived in Salina, Utah with her sister, Evelyn whose husband Bud fought in WWII. Both girls worked for Zion Lodge and Carma also served in Sun Valley when Grandpa built the lodge there. She graduated Salina High School.
She long outlived three ex-husbands. In 1945, Carma briefly married veteran, Vernon Liston. Later, Carma married Jay Leo Robinson in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she lived most of her life. They had one child together, a daughter, Rebecca Ann (Becky Hansen) Schara (Robert). On July 23, 1960 in Elko, Nevada, Carma married the love of her life, Richard "Dick" A. Carma had two step-daughters: Denise Rene Roberts (deceased) and Diana Gay Roberts Miller(Donn)of Henderson, Nevada. Dick and Carma welcomed : Shauna Louise Roberts Sumpter (Brian) of Martinez, CA.
Carma was an expert seamstress and her greatest talent was skill with embroidery, knitting and crochet. Look a-like dresses were something Carma created and made all the clothes when her girls were young from simple tops to tailored coats. During her years in Salt Lake City, Carma worked at Hot Shoppes downtown, then Zellerbach Paper Co. in accounting where she was retired.
In 1973, Carma and Dick moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where she worked at Circus Circus Casino. Carma liked Vegas and was involved in civic organizations and was elected president of the Opti-Mrs club for 1978-79. During the ten years there, Becky bore her only granddaughter, Amber Marie Hansen. Later at the birth of her first grandson, Daniel A. "Dax" Hansen, Carma returned to Salt Lake City. Dax and Lauren Elizabeth (Stephan) Hansen delighted her with great grandchildren: Jack Owen Hansen, age three, and Norah Grace Hansen, age one, all of Salt Lake City. Shauna is mother of two more grandsons: Matthew Joseph Piranio and Tannin James Ray Sumpter all of Martinez, CA.
Carma worked for the Sheraton Hotel in Salt Lake City, but her most loved career was with the Convention Visitors Center. She loved being uptown Salt Lake City, especially during the 2002 Winter Olympics. She bloomed again socially joining American Business Women's Association and enjoyed theatre and musical performances, puzzles, card games and smoking. Nearing 80, she moved to Tallahassee, Florida where she worked part-time until 85 at Cracker Barrel gift shop. Carma was that sweet little lady who loved to smile. She gave an oral history at the 2009 "Century of Sanctuary" Zion National Park employee's anniversary representing all the Carlson clan with vivid memories. In 2011, Becky and Bob moved back home to Utah with her to enjoy Zion year round. There Carma would share the old tales rocking in a chair at the lodge. She now resides in the arms of Jesus and has had a guardian angel surrounding her all of her life there is no doubt. "Whenever I see a rose I think of my Mother!"
