Myrlene Romney Wiest

Provo, Utah - Myrlene Romney Wiest passed away peacefully on December 22, 2012, in Provo, Utah. She was born, July 29, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was welcomed as the eighth child, of nine, in the loving family of Mary Vilate Lee and Park Romney. Myrlene was born and lived at 2145 South 300 East, Salt Lake City, for the first 22 years of her life. When just 16 years of age her devoted father passed away, leaving her without the benefit of his gentle guidance; however, her mother was blessed to be able to fill the terrible gap so that Myrlene said in retrospect, "While we were poor in material things, we were richly blessed of spiritual things."

Myrlene attended Madison Grammar and Junior High School and graduated from Granite High School. During these years she earned the Womanhood Medal and was honored to be president of the seminary. After working to earn some money, she attended the University of Utah before she decided to transfer to Brigham Young University. While there, she was introduced to Walter Gibson Wiest by her sister Carrol. Walter & Myrlene were married on June 4, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple after Walter's graduation from BYU with the apostle, Ezra Taft Benson, officiating. After a short honeymoon to Lake Tahoe, they moved to Madison Wisconsin, where Walter completed a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry.

After Walter's graduation from the University of Wisconsin, the family made Salt Lake and Murray their home for the next twelve years, following which, they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where they lived for 22 years and finished raising their seven dear children. In retirement they made their home in St. George, Utah. Following a few months with daughter, Karen, their final home was at Beehive Homes of Provo, Utah.

Throughout her life, Myrlene served devotedly in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints completing three missions with her beloved husband. She leaves a legacy of love and devotion as a faithful and affectionate wife, mother and grandmother. Throughout her life Myrlene made friends and sought to bless the lives of all with whom she came in contact. She cherishes the gospel of Jesus Christ and treasures her heritage and posterity with gratitude to the Lord for all His blessings.

Family members preceding her in death are: son, Richard Romney Wiest, daughter-in-law Phyllis Cowling, grand-daughter Anna Wiest and grandson Nicolas Wiest. She is survived by her beloved husband, Walter Gibson Wiest; her brother, Milton Clair Romney and his wife Carrie Glover; her children: David and Becky Dorn Wiest, Karen and Brian Anderson, Walter Romney "Bud" and Laura Nieto Wiest, Juli Peterson Wiest, Barton and Maricarmen Sanchez Wiest, Allyson and Paul Brown, Jennifer and Scott Christensen; 35 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside 2nd Ward, 2530 West 200 South, Provo, Utah, with a viewing from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm just prior. Interment will be in the Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, Utah, on Thursday, January 3, 2013, following a brief graveside service at 2:00 pm. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
