Estol James

U.S. Veteran

Ivins, UT - Estol James "Ike" Simkins, age 84, passed away on July 18, 2012 at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. He was born on May 8, 1928 in Provo, Utah, to James and Mary Buell Simkins. Ike had one brother and one sister. The family was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When Ike graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force and made a career of the service. He was very proud to serve in the military. While in the Air Force he met his first wife, Shelly. They had four children: Daniel, Renee, Steven and David.

Being in the Air Force took him to many destinations from California to North Africa. His family was allowed to go with him if he was stationed there for a couple of years. After 20 years or services, Ike retired from the Air Force.

He worked at BYU as an illustrator, until his job was phased out. He then gained employment at Groom Lake, better known as Area 51.

Ike enjoyed assembling historical military models in his spare time. He has an extensive collection and can tell you the history behind each piece of equipment.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; three sons: Daniel, Steven and David; and daughter, Renee.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ivins City Cemetery, Ivins, UT. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the Ivins LDS 10th Ward Chapel, 15 North Main, Ivins, UT. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221.
